Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, with high incidence rates, particularly in underserved regions like Sokoto State. Early detection and timely treatment are essential in controlling the spread of TB and reducing associated morbidity and mortality (World Health Organization, 2024). However, access to early diagnosis and treatment is limited in many rural areas, largely due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure and a shortage of specialized healthcare professionals.
Nurse practitioners (NPs) play an important role in the early detection and management of tuberculosis, particularly in primary care settings. Their training enables them to perform initial screenings, take histories, order diagnostic tests, administer medications, and provide follow-up care for TB patients (Aliyu & Usman, 2023). Research has shown that involving NPs in TB management can lead to early identification of cases and improved patient adherence to treatment regimens (Bello et al., 2023).
In Sokoto State, TB remains a significant concern, with many individuals experiencing delays in diagnosis and treatment. While NPs have been involved in TB care, their role in early detection and management has not been comprehensively evaluated. This study aims to examine the role of nurse practitioners in the early detection and management of tuberculosis in Sokoto State.
Despite the availability of TB treatment services in Sokoto State, many cases go undiagnosed or are diagnosed late, leading to poor health outcomes and increased transmission. The involvement of nurse practitioners in TB management has been shown to improve early diagnosis and treatment outcomes, but the extent of their impact in Sokoto State has not been well-documented (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023).
Nurse practitioners face challenges such as limited resources, insufficient training, and stigma surrounding TB that may affect their effectiveness in early detection and treatment. This study seeks to explore how NPs can contribute to improving TB care in Sokoto State and the barriers they encounter in the process.
This study will focus on TB care provided by nurse practitioners in primary healthcare centers in Sokoto State. Limitations may include differences in TB prevalence across regions and variations in the availability of diagnostic tools and treatment resources.
